Gary van Egmond has named a 17-man squad for Saturday’s third and final F3 Derby

Gary van Egmond has named a 17-man squad for Saturday-s third and final F3 derby and will wait until tomorrow-s training session to decide which formation the team will use against competition leaders, the Central Coast Mariners.

“For us we are looking at whether we go for a three or four on our backline, I felt the players did a good job last week but there were a number of times where we lost the ball so we have to get better with the ball this week,” the coach said.

Notable admissions to this week-s line-up are Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Ruben Zadkovich as well as youngster James Virgili.

With the Jets missing experienced players’ Jobe Wheelhouse and Francis Jeffers due to injury and Tarek Elrich to suspension, van Egmond has called upon a number of his young players for Saturday-s match.

“The likes of Ben Kantarovski and Jacob Pepper did quite well last week and they are only going to get better with more game time,” he explained.

“I thought Marko did well, we have to try and see how we can get him more forward and there were times where he got himself in some good positions.”

The Newcastle Jets 17-man squad is: 1. Ben Kennedy (gk), 2. Taylor Regan, 3. Mario Simic, 4. Nikolai Topor-Stanley, 5. Tiago Calvano, 6. Ben Kantarovski, 8. Jeremy Brockie, 9. Michael Bridges, 10. Ruben Zadkovich, 13. Sung-Hwan Byun, 14. Labinot Haliti, 17. James Virgili, 18. Marco Jesic, 19. Matthew Nash, 22. Ali Abbas, 23. Ryan Griffiths, 25. Jacob Pepper
