A-League: Kenny Miller joins coaching staff

Newcastle Jets can confirm the signing of Kenny Miller as the Club’s Senior Hyundai A-League Technical Director.

Miller, a Scottish legend with 18 goals in 69 appearances for his country, is the first addition to Carl Robinson’s coaching staff.

The former striker retired from playing in late January, after mutually terminating his contract with Scottish Championship club, Partick Thistle, bringing to a close a career which saw him play for clubs such as Rangers, Celtic, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Miller and Carl Robinson met at one of those clubs, Wolverhampton Wanderers, when the Scotsman joined the side on loan in 2001. That is where their professional and personal relationship began.

Miller played more than 200 times for Rangers.

The pair also linked up at Vancouver Whitecaps from 2012 to 2014, when the MLS club signed the marksman.

A short stint as a player/manager with Livingston in mid-2018 was Miller’s first senior coaching role, in charge for seven games with three wins, two draws, and two defeats.

Now, in Newcastle as part of Carl Robinson’s coaching team, Kenny Miller said the decision to come to the Jets was a no-brainer.

“Carl and I have been close for 20 years, I’ve worked with him when he was a player and when he was a manager,” Miller said.

“When the opportunity came up for me to join him here in Newcastle and continue my development as a coach, I was keen to take it with both hands.

“Carl sees success in the near future here in Newcastle, and I want to do all I can to help make that happen.”

Newcastle Jets CEO, Lawrie McKinna, lauded the signing of Miller as a coup for the Club.

“Kenny Miller has pedigree, he’s played for some big clubs, and I think he’s a great addition to the staff,” McKinna said.

“As Senior Technical Director for the Hyundai A-League side, he’ll assist Carl in his day-to-day duties as well as working with our Academy Technical Director, Craig Deans.”
