Academy: Opening NPL NSW weekend a success

An undefeated day of football for our boys at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility and a largely successful outing at Macarthur for our girls kickstarted the NPL NSW season for our Academy sides on Sunday.

Daniel McBreen’s Youth team edged their way to victory in the First Grade fixture on Sunday night with a 1-0 win over Prospect United.

It was a Sam Donnellan goal from the penalty spot, and a Brodie Volkiene save from the penalty spot at the other end, which helped secure all three points in a tough opening fixture in NPL NSW 4.

The win was the slimmest margin of the day for our lads – the U/19s and U/17s boys won 5-1 and 10-1 respectively to cruise to the top of the ladder in their respective divisions.

Archie Goodwin was a standout across those two fixtures, bagging five goals in the U/17s win over Prospect United before coming off the bench for the U/19s and scoring another two goals to take his day’s tally to seven.

A 1-0 defeat at Macarthur to our U/20s girls in their First Grade fixture was the only defeat of the day across our Academy teams, with both our U/18s and U/16s sides getting off to good starts with 2-1 and 3-1 wins respectively.

Chloe Smith scored both goals in the U/18s two-goal victory, while Ella Murray bagged two and Brin Gentle one in the U/16s victory.
