Andrews stars as Jets soar over Reds

Youngster Tara Andrews has netted five second-half goals to hand the Newcastle Jets a 7-1 victory in the Westfield W-League.

The Newcastle Jets’ Westfield W-League side has cruised to a comfortable 7-1 win over Adelaide United in steamy conditions at Wanderers Oval on Saturday afternoon.

Impressive 16-year-old striker Tara Andrews claimed five outstanding goals, all in the second half, and playmaker Melissa Feuerriegel chimed in with a brace of her own to round out the thrashing.

Midfielder Rachael Quigley levelled matters for Adelaide prior to the half-time whistle, but the second-half demolition by Andrews ensured the home side would ease to victory over the Westfield W-League-s cellar dwellers.

With both sides locked at 1-all at the halftime interval, the match burst into life in the second stanza and the Jets would assert their dominance, scoring four times in a frantic 15-minute period at the start of the second period.

In the process, Andrews bagged one of the goals of the season in the 52nd minute when she launched an outrageous chip over Adelaide goalkeeper Kristi Harvey from all of 35-yards.

Matters were made even worse for the visitors on 65 minutes when hard-hitting midfielder Ruth Blackburn was sent-off by referee Kirralee Gardener after picking up her second yellow card.

The Jets naturally finished all over the top of the depleted Reds in the final moments, with Andrews claiming two more goals in the final five minutes of the game to rocket to the top of the Westfield W-League goalscoring charts with 7.

The win boosts the Jets up to 9 competition points and keeps the Novocastrians in touch with the top four sides on the Westfield W-League ladder. The Reds, though, remain rooted to the bottom of the table with no points to their name.
