German international and new Jets signing Ariane Hingst has been announced as captain of the Newcastle Jets W-League side.

Hingst has been at the Club only a short time however her leadership on and off the field was quickly identified by coach Clayton Zane.

“Ariane has an amazing playing CV including two winning World Cup medals,” Zane said.

“She has integrated well into the squad and in the short time she has been here she has demonstrated her ability to lead on and off the field.

“Ariane has the respect of her peers and her leadership skills and determination to succeed will hopefully inspire others around her to follow her lead.”

With a number of new signings at the Jets, including Matildas captain Melissa Barbieri, Hingst will be well supported in the role.

“Melissa will have a major leadership role in the team but she will also be moving between Newcastle and Melbourne where her family resides,” Zane added.

“We are lucky to have several experienced players within the squad this year including Gema Simon and Alison Logue who have been with the team since the formation of the W-League who also provide valuable leadership qualities.”

The Jets W-League play their first game of the new season this Saturday at Adamstown Oval, kick-off is 2pm. A reminder Jets ticketed members are entitled to free entry to W-League and Youth home games this season.
