Newcastle Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti has been cleared to resume training this week following a fractured cheekbone.

Newcastle Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti has been cleared to resume training this week following a meeting with the surgeon on Friday.

The goalkeeper fractured his cheekbone in the Jets Round 7 loss to Wellington Phoenix at Hunter Stadium, and had surgery a week later.

“The surgeon is happy with Mark’s progress since then and the outcome of the surgery,” Physiotherapist Robert Dingle said.

“Given the surgery he had, Mark’s cheekbone is structurally strong and his return is a lot about his confidence from this point.”

“Mark will resume light duties this week in a controlled environment and start to train at a higher intensity the following week.”

If you ask the goalkeeper, he will be back between the sticks before the New Year.

“I am feeling great and I can’t wait to start training again next week,” Birighitti said.

“I am pushing to get back before the New Year and hope to play in the game against Melbourne Victory.”
