Newcastle Jets defender Josh Brillante says he hopes to push his claims for a starting spot with a strong pre-season.

Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets defender Josh Brillante says he hopes to push his claims for a starting spot in the Jets line-up with a strong pre-season.

The versatile Brillante, who can play as a right fullback or central midfielder, proved he was up to A-League standard by playing 14 matches for Gold Coast United last season.

He said he was hoping to build on that tally during the 2012/13 campaign with the Jets.

“I think for every player their goal is to be a regular starter in the team so that-s definitely one of mine as well,” Brillante said.

“Hopefully I can keep playing consistently throughout the season.”

Brillante said he made the decision to join the Jets after being impressed by the direction Club is heading and the coastal lifestyle Newcastle has to offer.

“I-ve heard good stories about Newcastle and that it is a nice place, so I was happy to hear that,” he said.

“Last season I was watching how Newcastle play and I really enjoyed how they play and their style of football as well.

“The boys were really good to me and it seems like a good group of lads so I-m very excited about the season ahead.”

Brillante is one of a number of talented youngsters recruited by the Jets during the off-season and the 19-year-old is confident he will flourish in the playing systems favoured by the Jets coaching staff.

“I think I will fit perfectly because I like to get forward and attack as well. I-m very energetic and like to keep moving so I should fit in well,” he explained.

“It-s a young squad this season and I-m looking forward to it and hopefully we can get to the finals this year.”
