With Jobe Wheelhouse suspended this week, Gary van Egmond has chosen Tiago Calvano to captain the Jets for their Week 12 game against Wellington Phoenix on Friday night.
Van Egmond said it wasn-t a hard decision to make with the Brazilian defender, who has had an impact on and off the field since his arrival at the start of this season.
“Tiago has the respect of all the players in the team and he conducts himself like a true professional,” the coach said.
“He has a really good insight into the game and the knowledge of how we want to play.
“He really stands out and is happy to put his hand up.”
The Newcastle Jets traveled to Sydney on Wednesday before flying out to Wellington on Thursday morning. The team will have their final training session upon arrival into Wellington.
