Zenon Caravella believes his midfield combination with Jets captain Ruben Zadkovich can only get better.

Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets midfielder Zenon Caravella believes his combination with Jets captain Ruben Zadkovich can only get better after the pair starred in the Jets- 2-0 win over Melbourne Heart last Friday.

Starting alongside each other for only the second time, Caravella and Zadkovich controlled the centre of midfield with their relentless desire to win possession and distribute the ball effectively to their Jets teammates.

“I love playing with Ruben in there, he never gives up and he-s got a great winning mentality,” Caravella said.

“I think you need to have that in the midfield and I really enjoy working with him.

“As a team I thought we played really well. We were very disciplined and we were always in good positions on the field to win second balls and make good transitions for a counter-attack.”

Caravella said he was hopeful that last Friday-s crucial win over the Heart would be the catalyst for the Jets to cement a spot in the A-League top six.

“I think everyone hopes so,” Caravella said.

“There-s a lot of potential in this team and a lot of great players, I think it-s just a matter of putting it together on game day.

“Hopefully Friday was a good stepping-stone for the next few games, because they-re very important.”

Caravella was substituted in the 86th minute of the match against the Heart after feeling some tightness in is hamstring, however he said the issue was nothing serious.

“It was just precautionary. I was a little bit tight but it feels good now,” Caravella said.

“There are still a few days before the game so we-re just making sure everything is OK.”

The Jets face Brisbane Roar at Hunter Stadium on Friday night in another fixture that will prove vitally important in the Jets- push for a finals spot.

“The Roar really aren-t travelling as well this year, they-re not playing consistently like they were last year,” Caravella said.

“Every team in the competition is beatable so I think we-ve got a great chance to beat them, especially at home.”
