Duo receive Qantas Socceroos call-up

Matt Thompson and Ben Kantarovski have been selected in Pim Verbeek’s 25-man Qantas Socceroos squad to take on Indonesia in Brisbane on March 3.

Newcastle Jets players Matt Thompson and Ben Kantarovski have been selected in Pim Verbeek-s 25-man Qantas Socceroos squad for the AFC Asian Cup 2011 Qualifier against Indonesia, presented by FOXTEL, to be played at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday, 3 March.

It is the second straight National Team selection for Thompson, who earned his third Qantas Socceroos cap when he came off the bench against Kuwait in January of this year.

For 18-year-old Kantarovski, it is his second selection for the Qantas Socceroos after receiving numerous call-ups to the Australian U/17 and U/20 sides in recent years, and the precocious talent will no doubt be hoping to pick up his first full cap for the National Team.

The selection news comes as a timely boost for the duo, as the Jets prepare to take on Gold Coast United this Saturday evening in a sudden-death play-off in the first week of the Hyundai A-League 2010 Finals Series.

Jets CEO John Tsatsimas today expressed his delight for the pair ahead of the club-s fourth finals campaign in five seasons of the Hyundai A-League.

“The call-up for both Matt and Ben is certainly a wonderful reward for their efforts throughout this season and we wish them nothing but the best as they look to don and green and gold in the coming weeks.”

“Obviously between now and then our club will play in a crucial knockout finals match which will take place on the Gold Coast this Saturday night. So we hope that the selection of these boys will serve to lift the entire squad as they travel north with the hopes and dreams of all Novocastrians,” he said.
