The Newcastle Jets can announce an official Hyundai A-League pre-season clash with the Central Coast Mariners at Maitland’s No.1 Sportsground on Saturday 25 August.
In what shapes as a curtain raiser for three big regular season fixtures, the trial will be the first all Hyundai A-League match played in the area, following previous pre-season trials against NPL opposition.
It could also be the Jets first hit-out in Newcastle (pending FFA Cup results) and will be one of a limited number of games on home soil for Ernie Merrick’s side.
Jets CEO, Lawrie McKinna said the match was another opportunity to take football to the community.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for us to continue to grow the game in Newcastle and show our commitment to the entire region,” McKinna said.
“We’ve just come back from a tour of the Mid North Coast and while Maitland is a lot closer to home, it’s still nice to take football outside of town during pre-season.
“We’ve got some fantastic supporters in Maitland and the surrounding suburbs who drive to McDonald Jones Stadium every weekend, this is a small way we can show our appreciation for their continued support.
“Maitland City Council have been fantastic in their support of this fixture and I’d like to thank them for making this possible – it’s going to be a great afternoon of football.”
