Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners will contest one of the most significant F3 Derby matches in recent memory at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday.

Jets (7th) will take on Mariners (9th) and if there is to be a winner the victor will edge closer the Hyundai A-League’s top six and subsequently Finals football.

The Jets are just three points outside the six, while the Mariners are five points adrift of sixth-placed Western Sydney Wanderers.

Ahead of the fixture here are some interesting facts about the #F3Derby, stretching all the way back to the very first season of the regional rivalry.

  • The Jets are undefeated in the F3 Derby for the last 869 days, or the last six (6) matches.
  • The last five (5) F3 Derby fixtures played at McDonald Jones Stadium have ended in a draw.
  • A Mariners player has been dismissed in the last two (2) derbies at McDonald Jones Stadium.
  • This match is held two (2) days after the 9th anniversary of the Jets Grand Final win over Central Coast in 2008.

  • Don’t leave early – 22 of the 83 goals in this fixture have been scored in the last 15 minutes.
  • Sunday’s match is set to be Jason Hoffman’s 12th F3 Derby. He’s only ever lost one (1) F3 Derby – the Semi Final second leg in 2008.
  • When a Jets visa player has scored in this fixture (9 occasions), they have lost only once. That was in season 2005/06 when Vaughan Coveny scored an 85th minute goal in a 4-1 loss.
