The Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets have signed former North Queensland Fury player Chris Grossman as injury cover for midfielder Ben Kantarovski.

Kantarovski had arthroscopic surgery last week to clean up a small meniscus tear in his right knee and is likely to be sidelined for a minimum of six weeks.

Grossman joins the Jets having made 43 A-League appearances for the Fury between 2009 and 2011. Prior to that the 25-year-old played seven matches for Queensland Roar during three seasons at the Club.

He has most recently been playing with Moreland Zebras in the Victorian Premier League (VPL).

“It-s unfortunate for Ben that he-s out injured with his knee, but I-ve been lucky enough to be called in to help out for a few weeks and I-m here to enjoy it, so it-s a great opportunity,” Grossman said.

“I think it-s a great opportunity. The Jets are doing extremely well this season sitting where they are and I-m hoping to come in now and add something and help their roll-on in the season.”

Grossman said he has been working hard to keep himself in shape since the conclusion of the VPL season in the hope that he would be picked up by an A-League Club.

“I-m hopeful of still getting back in the A-League and this is a great opportunity for myself and I-ve got to prove it with the time I-ve got here,” he said.

“I-ve been playing in the Victorian Premier League and keeping myself fit.

“That season finished about a month ago now, so I-ve had to do a little bit of extra work by myself, but I-m ready to get rolling tomorrow at training and hopefully push my case for next week-s game in Melbourne.”

The former Young Socceroo said he was eager to make a positive contribution to the Newcastle squad during his time at the Club.

“I-ve heard a lot about the boys here, that they-re a great group of guys,” Grossman added.

They-re sitting in a great position now so hopefully I can come in and it can be smooth sailing and we can all have success together.”
