The Newcastle Jets defeated the Newcastle Jets Youth 3-1 in an intra-club trial match at Rockwell Automation Park in Weston on Wednesday night.
The Jets first team started the contest with Ben Kennedy in goals and a back three of Adrian Madaschi, Kew Jaliens and Taylor Regan.
Occupying midfield was Ben Kantarovski, Mitch Oxborrow, Nick Ward, with Craig Goodwin and Jacob Pepper on the flanks.
Josh Barresi offered support for Joel Griffiths, who lead the Jets’ front line.
In a match played in two 35 minute halves, it was Barresi who opened the scoring for the Jets first team in the 10th minute after he pounced on an error at the back from the Jets youth and calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper John Solari.
Jets first team shot stopper Kennedy was called into action in the 15th minute, making a smart save to deny Liam O’Reilly’s shot from the top of the box.
Kennedy was on hand again six minutes later to keep out Michael Finalyson’s drive with a sharp reflex save at the near post.
Goodwin went close to doubling the Jets first team’s lead in the 31st minute after he was put through on goal by Mitch Oxborrow, however youth team goalkeeper John Solari was up to the task, making a good save.
A quickly taken free-kick two minutes later saw Pepper released down the right flank. His dangerous early cross was parried by Solari into the path of Barresi who finished from point-blank range to make it 2-0 in favour of the Jets first team.
The Jets first team started the second half with Kennedy in goals and a back three of Sam Gallagher, Sam Gallaway and Regan.
Trialist Kearyn Bacchus replaced Nick Ward in the only change to the midfield, with Jonny Steele and James Virigli filling sports on the left and right wing respectively.
Brandon Lundy replaced Barresi to partner Griffiths up front.
Oxborrow made it 3-0 in favour of the Jets’ first team in the 58th minute with a composed side-footed finish from close range following Lundy’s low cross into the penalty box.
The Jets’ youth scored a late consolation with arguably the goal of the match, when Luke Willis connected with Nick Cowburn’s cross and finish with a sublime backheel past Kennedy to make the final score 3-1.
