The fixture will be the first ever A-League game shown on free-to-air television, with SBS broadcasting the match live across Australia.

The corresponding fixture last season drew a crowd of 35,419 for the first showdown between marquee stars Emile Heskey and Alessandro Del Piero. Both players scored as Newcastle won the match 3-2.

The Jets- first home game of the season will take place the following week, when they host Perth Glory at Hunter Stadium on Sunday, October 20.

The clash with Perth will be the first of 14 Newcastle Jets home matches during the 2013/14 A-League season.

In total, the Jets will have eight Saturday night matches, two Friday night games and four Sunday fixtures at Hunter Stadium.

The F3 Derby will once-again be one of the most highly-anticipated fixtures of the season for Jets Members and supporters.

Newcastle will host the Central Coast Mariners at home just once in 2013/14, with the reigning A-League Champions visiting in Round 4 on Saturday, November 2.

The two other F3 Derby matches will be played at Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford on Saturday, January 25 (Round 16) and Saturday, March 15 (Round 23).

Premiers- Plate winners Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Victory will both visit Newcastle twice in 2013/14, while Del Piero and the Sky Blues will play their only match in the Hunter in Round 20, on Saturday February 22.

The Jets will also benefit from only having to make one long-haul trip each to Perth and Wellington during the course of the season.

The Jets wrap up their season with a final round showdown with Adelaide United at Hunter Stadium.

“As a Club, we-re very pleased with the draw in both a football and commercial sense,” Jets CEO Robbie Middleby said.

“We-re excited to make history by playing in the first A-League match ever to be televised on free-to-air TV when we take on Sydney FC in first Round 1.

“On top of that, our Members and supporters have plenty of exciting home fixtures to look forward this season with the F3 Derby in Round 4, two visits from Western Sydney Wanderers and an appearance by Alessandro Del Piero and Sydney FC in Round 20.

“In a football sense, we-re pleased we-ll only have to make the challenging trip to Wellington and Perth once each, while having six of our last 10 games at home could be very beneficial for us come the pointy end of the season.”
