Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets defender Josh Brillante says the Jets will put their 3-0 loss to Wellington Phoenix behind them and look to bounce back against Melbourne Heart this weekend.
The Jets held 61% of possession and won 14 corners compared to Wellington-s 3 during the contest, but they were unable to turn those numbers into the statistic that counts – goals.
Brillante said the Jets would be looking to correct that when they travel to Melbourne to face the Heart on Saturday.
“It was definitely disappointing to lose the game 3-0 like that, but I think we played well in patches and hopefully we can progress from that next week,” Brillante said.
“You-ve just got to put results like this behind you, train hard during the week and look forward to the next game.
“Melbourne Heart is another difficult team, but we just need to concentrate on how we play and try and do a better job of executing that than we did against Wellington.”
After falling behind in the 44th minute courtesy of a Jeremy Brockie goal, the Jets worked tirelessly to get back on level terms in the second half.
Unfortunately for the 13,116 Jets Members and supporters in attendance, Wellington put the result beyond doubt with goals to Brockie and Paul Ifill inside the final 10 minutes.
Brillante said the final 3-0 margin wasn-t truly reflective of the evenness of the contest.
“I think the score line was probably a little bit harsh in the end,” he said.
“We were down 1-nil and we were pushing forward to try and score some goals at home, but it was unfortunate that they we able to get a couple of goals at the end.”
Brillante came straight into the Jets- starting XI just two days after returning from the AFC-U19 Championships in the UAE where he played in every minute of the Young Socceroos- campaign that saw them reach the semi-finals.
The 19-year-old was employed in an unfamiliar role at left-back against Wellington, but did an admirable job despite being somewhat travel-weary.
“I was definitely a bit fatigued coming back from a Championship like that but it was good to come straight back into the starting line-up and get some minutes under my belt for the first team,” Brillante said.
“I think personally I could have done a bit better, but I can-t dwell on that, I just have to look forward to the next game.”
