The Newcastle Jets have re-signed striker Joel Griffiths until the end of the 2014/15 Hyundai A-League season.

The Newcastle Jets have re-signed striker Joel Griffiths to a one-year contract extension, keeping him at the Club until the end of the 2014/15 Hyundai A-League season.

After five seasons plying his trade in China, as well as a short spell at Sydney FC, Griffiths returned to Newcastle for his second stint with the Club towards the back end of last season.

The Jets- all-time leading goal-scorer found the back of the net three times in eight matches during Newcastle-s 2013/14 campaign.

The former Socceroo had previously earned legend status in the Hunter after winning the A-League-s Golden Boot award and the Johnny Warren Medal during the Jets- 2007/08 Championship winning season.

In total, Griffiths has made 68 Hyundai A-League appearances for Newcastle, scoring 31 goals.

“To be honest, it wasn-t a tough decision to re-sign,” Griffiths said.

“This is the best Club I-ve ever played for and I-m so grateful I-ve had the opportunity to come back to Newcastle and play for the Jets again.

“Once Phil Stubbins was appointed, I sat down with him and I really liked what he had to say and that helped seal the deal.

“I want to be remembered for winning two Championships in Newcastle, not just one and that-s what is driving me everyday.

“The body feels good and I-m looking forward to hitting the ground running with a good pre-season and then hopefully everything will take care of itself.”

Jets CEO Robbie Middleby said the Club was delighted to have secured the services of Griffiths for another season.

“Joel gives his all for the Newcastle Jets every time he steps onto the pitch and that is exactly the type of player we want at this Club,” Middleby said.

“He is a proven goal-scorer and gives us valuable experience in the attacking third.

“Joel has achieved so much with the Jets in the past and we are very excited about his future with the Club.”
