The Newcastle Jets are giving the crème of the NBN State League competition in Under-20 and First Grade a chance to impress when they meet in an exciting pre-season fixture.
The matches scheduled for Wednesday, 14 July, will feature the Jets Youth side taking on an NBN Select Under-20 side to be coached by Brett Fewkes (South Cardiff), as well as an NBN First Grade squad to be coached by Chris Miner (West Wallsend) who will clash with the Jets senior side.
The pre-season fixtures will allow the Hunter-s football fans the opportunity to see the Region-s best players, both at Hyundai A-League and NBN State League level on display.
“It-s fantastic to team up with Northern NSW Football in order to put on this exciting pre-season fixture,” said Jets CEO John Tsatsimas.
“Obviously this is a great opportunity for everyone within the local football community to come together, and additionally it will provide a great way for our squad to continue their pre-season preparations.
“Everyone at the club is full of enthusiasm as we move toward the coming Hyundai A-League campaign and these matches against the Northern NSW Select Sides will allow the public to see our squad, including our new signings, as we build toward the season proper.”
These sentiments were shared by Northern NSW Football-s Chief Executive Officer David Eland.
“The NBN State League, in conjunction with our high performance program at Northern NSW Football is about developing players to ultimately have the ability to play at A-League level,” Mr. Eland said.
“This pre-season trial match with the Jets will allow our best NBN State League players the opportunity to show what they have got against the Jets and I-m confident that with them being mid season, playing at their best, our players will provide a quality test for the Jets.
“These will be highly entertaining matches and I believe that the football community will support this initiative that will see the Jets and Northern NSW Football working together to provide our local players with the opportunity to test their ability against our own national league side,” Mr. Eland concluded.
Northern NSW Football-s High Performance Manager, David Smith is working with both Brett Fewkes and Chris Miner on the selection of the NBN State League sides to face the Jets, with squads expected to be announced in the next week.
Importantly the Jets themselves are also being given the opportunity to have input into the NBN sides selection.
“This is a great opportunity for the Jets to identify local players that they are interested in as well,” David Smith said. “We are working with the Jets to identify players they think could potentially figure in their clubs future and using these pre season fixtures as a vehicle to allow Jets selectors to see them in action.”
