The Newcastle Jets Youth defeated the Weston Workers FC 5-3 on Saturday evening at Rockwell Automation Park.
Newcastle Jets Youth notched a thrilling 5-3 victory over Weston Workers FC in their Round 4 NBN State League clash at Rockwell Automation Park on Saturday night.
The Jets opened the scoring inside the first 10 minutes when centre-back Nick Cowburn netted his third goal in four games after heading home Kale Bradbery-s corner.
However, a Cowburn own goal and an opportunistic finish from Jamie Subat saw Weston hit the front with just under 15 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Jets hit back before the interval with Bradbery converting from the penalty spot to make it 2-2 before capitalising on a mistake by the Weston defence to give the Jets the lead going into the break.
Weston equalised shortly after half-time through Gary McDermott only for the Jets to respond almost instantly with Bradbery completing his hat trick to make it 4-3.
Last season-s NBN State League Golden Boot winner scored his fourth goal of the match with under five minutes to remaining to seal a 5-3 win for the Jets.
Jets Youth coach Clayton Zane said he was extremely pleased with the resolve shown by his players during the topsy-turvy contest.
“Weston had made a good start to the season so we knew we were going to be in for a tough match,” Zane said.
“It was an open game with lots of chances and I was really proud of the character our boys showed to come back from 2-1 down in the first half.
“It would have been easy for them to drop their heads after letting in two goals in a short space of time, but it was a really good reaction and we kicked on with it in the second half.”
