The NBN Select Youth side secured an impressive 5-1 victory over the Newcastle Jets Youth side at Darling Street Oval on Saturday.

The select side only took a one goal lead going into the half time break with the Jets finishing on top later on; but they managed four second half goals as they ran our convincing winners.

Andrew Hoole captained the Jets Youth side and forced a nice save from Nick Jovanovic after five minutes with Alex Read almost slotting home the rebound; as two local State League players threatened to score early on.

The Jets defence headed a Matthew Paul free kick onto their own cross bar on 10 minutes as they survived a scare early on.

Newcastle had a few chances with Alex Read getting into good position in front of goal but couldn-t get the breakthrough they needed.

It was the NBN side that would take the lead though as Dino Fajkovic took advantage of a defensive mishap on 30 minutes and sent his shot past Jack Duncan in the Jets goals to give his side a 1-0 lead.

The Jets controlled possession for the final 20 minutes of the half but couldn-t capitalise going into the break.

NBN Select doubled their advantage just three minutes after the restart when Mason Campbell headed home at the back post and signalled what was to come as they raced to a 5-0 lead after just 70 minutes.

Harry Maguire made it 3-0 as he kept his composure to finish after some nice play from Luke Virgilli down the left flank.

Dino Fajkovic and Matthew Hoole added two goals in quick succession as they both rounded the keeper to finish in similar fashion with NBN Select scoring a flurry of quick goals.

Blake Green replied shortly after for the Jets heading home from a set piece, but the damage was already done to make the final score line 5-1.

NBN Select First Grade Coach Damien Smith said, “They were very dominant, I thought they did very well; a few of the young boys had a point to prove hoping to gain selection into the Jets Youth side.”

With the vast majority of the NBN Select Youth side regular first graders for their respective State League clubs, Northern NSW certainly has an array of young talent, and they showed it with their win over the Newcastle Jets Youth on Saturday.
