Newcastle Jets midfielder Josh Brillante claimed the Male U20 Footballer of the Year title at the fifth annual Australian Football Awards, which were held at a gala event at the Sydney Convention Centre tonight.

“I was really surprised to win the award but obviously very pleased,” Brillante said.

“It makes me want to work harder and have an even better year ahead.

“It was a great occasion and now I can’t wait to get back to Hunter Stadium for our big game against the Roar on Sunday.”

The Australian Football Awards celebrate and commend the best soccer teams, players and coaches from around the country each year.

Last year’s U20s Footballer of the Year was goalkeeper Mat Ryan, who presented Brillante with his award on Wednesday night.

“We are really proud of Josh for winning this prestigious award and pleased he has been recognised for his performances for the Jets and the Australian national teams,” CEO Robbie Middleby said.

“Josh has a very bright future and we feel privileged to have him representing the Newcastle Jets.”
