Junior Jets defeated by mini Mariners

Newcastle Jets Youth suffered a 3-1 defeat to local rivals Central Coast Mariners in round 14 of the Foxtel National Youth League in Tuggerah on Sunday.

James Pascoe’s young charges took the lead against Stu Jacobs’ mini Mariners on the Central Coast after midfielder Ryan Ensor burst forward and finished well in the 24th minute of play.

However, the Novocastrian’s lead did not last long, with junior Jets defender Caio de Godoy unfortunately putting the ball into the back of his own net just five minutes later as the match moved to 1-1.

Central Coast Youth were awarded a penalty in the 40th minute of play, however Jets custodian Jesse Cook superbly dived to his right to deny Mariners Hyundai A-League squad member Anthony Kalik from 12 yards.

There was little that Cook could do five minutes after the restart to thwart Kalik, however, with the young attacking midfielder finishing with aplomb to make the score 2-1.

Pascoe’s boys did all they could to find a leveler as the clock wound towards 90 minutes, but Central Coast defender Marko Bosnar put the game out of reach in the 80th minute when he headed home from close range.

In time added on Cook added to his strong display by denying Mariners substitute Lachlan Wales with a sharp reflex save.
