The Melbourne Victory have escaped with a 2-1 win against the Newcastle Jets at AAMI Park last night following a 90th minute goal by Ricardinho.

The Jets were unlucky not to leave Melbourne with at least a draw after a solid performance saw them have the run of play for most of the night.

Ricardinho’s goal came on the back of a Robbie Kruse cross, sealing the win for the Victory and consigning the Jets to two consecutive losses.

Branko Culina’s men had toiled hard to work their way back into the match following a 20th minute goal from Carlos Hernandez.

The breakthrough came through tireless midfielder Ruben Zadkovich, whose long range shot in the 54th minute put the teams back on level terms.

The Jets had other opportunities to score in the first half but undoubtedly the best chance came six minutes into the match when Jobe Wheelhouse sent a shot wide.

Jets back Tarek Elrich was impressive on the night, causing problems for Melbourne down their left-side, but ultimately the Jets could not convert their pressure into goals.

The Jets now return to EnergyAustralia Stadium for their January 3 clash against Sydney FC.
