The Newcastle Jets are pleased to formally announce the signing of Matt Millar from the Central Coast Mariners.

A deal was confirmed back in January after Millar signed a pre-contract agreement with the Club, and the full-back is now set to head up the M1 on a two-year deal.

The Hyundai A-League 2018/19 season proved a breakout one for the attack-minded defender after he joined the Mariners from NPL Victoria club, South Melbourne.

With eight assists – the second highest in the league – in 24 appearances, Millar became one of the most crucial players in the Mariners side.

Ernie Merrick was confident Millar would be a strong addition to his squad.

“For a player signed from the NPL, Matt Millar stepped up and did incredibly well at the Central Coast,” Merrick said.

“In a side that finished bottom of the league, Matt ended up with the second most assists in the league.
“We’re confident he’ll be a good addition to the side and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do in Jets colours.”

CEO, Lawrie McKinna was pleased to have the deal for Millar done.

“Obviously, the deal became apparent in the middle of January, but we’re pleased to be able to formally announce Matt’s signing,” McKinna said.

“The Club welcomes Matt to Newcastle and we’re excited to see him play the next two seasons in Jets colours.”

With Millar currently enjoying a well-earned break from the football pitch, he’ll link up with the Club on July 1 for the start of pre-season training.
