In a major coup for the Newcastle Jets, former Boston Breakers forward Katie Stengel will join the club for the 2017/18 Westfield W-League season.

Stengel joins the Jets after a season with Western Sydney Wanderers on loan in 2016/17, in addition to stints with the Washington Spirit and Bayern Munich.

The United States U/23 representative joined her teammates for the first time at Newcastle’s No.2 Sportsground since arriving in Australia.

Jets’ W-League Head Coach, Craig Deans was looking forward to having Stengel on board for the 2017/18 campaign.

“I think Katie’s record speaks for itself and to have a player of her calibre here in Newcastle is fantastic for the club,” said Deans.

“She’s performed at the highest level and is a genuine goal scorer which will really complement the type of football we want to play this season.

“Aside from what she offers on the pitch, Katie’s experience is going to be so valuable to some of our younger girls coming through – she’s played in World Cups and at some of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Stengel joins the Jets after spending the 2016/17 Westfield W-League season with the Western Sydney Wanderers in which she finished as their leading goal scorer.

On arriving in Newcastle, Stengel said she was looking forward to getting to know the beachside city.

“I’ve only been here a few days but Newcastle is a beautiful place and I’m really looking forward to getting into training,” said Stengel.

“Craig has put together a really exciting squad of players and I think this season will be a really enjoyable one both on and off the park.

“It’s awesome to be back in Australia again, the W-League is going from strength to strength and I’m really happy to be a part of that with Jets this season.”

Stengel is expected to make her debut next week in the Jets’ Round 1 clash at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday 29 October against Western Sydney Wanderers.
