Newcastle Jets can today confirm that the Club has bolstered its defensive ranks with the addition of former Sydney FC and Adelaide United player Iain Fyfe on a short-term injury replacement contract.
Fyfe, 34, has been training with the Jets since Monday and is now eligible for selection for the Club’s Hyundai A-League Round 7 F3 Derby against Central Coast Mariners at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday.
Fyfe will wear the number 26 kit for the Club throughout his time in the Hunter, and signs on for his former Reds teammate Daniel Mullen.
Although he has not played professionally since 2014 Fyfe brings a wealth of Hyundai A-League and international experience to the Club.
A Championship winner with Sydney FC in the inaugural season of the Hyundai A-League, Fyfe also played professionally in Scotland, Korea Republic and Iran during his career.
The former Australian youth international has featured consistently for Campbelltown City in the National Premier Leagues (South Australia) over the past two years under the guidance of Joe Mullen — Daniel Mullen’s father.
Fyfe helped Campbelltown to a 1-0 PS4 NPL Grand Final win over Adelaide City in September.
“I am happy to be here in Newcastle,” Fyfe said. “Unfortunately a few of the boys got injured but it is an opportunity for myself and I am here to help as much as I can and help the young boys and guide them a little bit, and hopefully we get a few results.”
“My [Jets] teammates are excellent, they have been fantastic since I have been here and the coaching staff have been in excellent in terms of how they have handled my loading. Training has been at a high intensity but we can always improve on everything and that’s what I aim to help to do.”
Asked about the prospect of featuring in Sunday’s F3 Derby and perhaps earning a longer contract at the Jets, Fyfe said: “I am not at 100 per cent at the moment but I feel confident in my body and also my mind and where I am at the moment. I am happy and I am looking forward to whatever part I have to play.”
“You never know with football and I am at a stage in my career and in my life where I am just happy to play and if that goes for the contract time that we have agreed with Newcastle that’s great, and if it goes on long than that’s even better because I love playing football and I love playing in the [Hyundai] A-League. I am 34 but I feel like I am 24.”
