Nigel Boogaard was born and raised in Newcastle and is the captain of the club. A highly experienced central defender, the Boogaard name is synonymous with Newcastle football – Nigel’s father Michael also played for the region on the national stage. Boogaard played for Newcastle Breakers during his youth days and in the NSL, before shifting to Central Coast Mariners for the start of the Hyundai A-League. In five seasons with Mariners Boogaard won a Premiers Plate and claimed two runners-up medals. Boogaard shifted to Adelaide United in 2009 and stayed with the Reds until mid-2015. Boogaard is contracted to Newcastle Jets until the completion of the Hyundai A-League 2017/18 season.
