Newcastle Jets are pleased to announce that highly regarded local Peter McGuinness has been appointed to the role of Head Coach of the Club’s PS4 National Premier Leagues (NPL) men’s team.

McGuinness – who has spent the past two seasons as Head Coach of the Jets’ Westfield W-League side under the management of Northern NSW Football – takes up the position effective immediately.

McGuinness is well known in Newcastle and Hunter footballing circles having played at the elite level in the region before taking up coaching roles with clubs including Hamilton Olympic, Lake Macquarie City FC, and Broadmeadow Magic.

He spent four years working with the New South Wales Institute of Sport’s U17 boys program in the past, and also coached the successful U16 boys Emerging Jets squad last year.

Having worked extensively in junior development in the area, plus having coached many of the members of the Jets’ 2015 PS4 NPL men’s squad before, McGuinness is confident he can achieve his key goal of improving the players that are part of the Club’s PS4 NPL squad.

“It’s important that we continue progressing as players and people,” McGuinness said. “My job is simply to come in with the group that we’ve got for the NPL season, assist them, and make sure that they are enjoying themselves.”

“Many of the players that are part of the squad I have coached or known for a number of years. But there are also some fresh faces, so I am looking forward to meeting those players and coming to understand their attributes and how they can improve.”

McGuinness added that he’s keen to collaborate with the Jets’ senior football staff during his tenure as the Club’s PS4 NPL mentor.

“I look forward to having some sort of exposure to the first team, but I am very focussed on the youth and making sure that first and foremost I do the right thing by the youth players to help give them every opportunity to become Hyundai A-League players,” he concluded.
