Preview: #F3Derby in the Hunter

Thumbnail

It’s the one-and-only F3 Derby at McDonald Jones Stadium for the 2017/18 season, as the Jets host the Central Coast Mariners in Round 15.

It was an absolute demolition in the Round 1 fixture between the two sides, as the Jets put 5 past Paul Okon’s men in a clinical performance.

The win was the start of what has been an outstanding first half of the season for the Novocatrians, who sit a comfortable second on the Hyundai A-League ladder.

The Jets will be buoyed by a gallant last-start performance against Sydney FC, pushing the reigning Champions all the way to earn a point on the road.

Likewise, the Mariners shared the spoils with the Victory in sweltering conditions in Geelong and will be looking to atone for their Round 1 defeat.

Both sides find themselves amidst a busy period of matches during the league’s Summer Football Festival, with the Jets set to host the Roar on Friday night at McDonald Jones Stadium – just three days after the Derby fixture.

For the home side, they will welcome back skipper Nigel Boogaard and Jack Duncan from injury, while Ivan Vujica returns from a one-week suspension.

The match also marks the debut of the Jets’ latest signing, Patricio Rodriguez who is expected to play a role of the bench in the fixture.

It will also be the last match for Joe Champness in Jets’ colours for a number of weeks, as the young star earned a call up to the Australian squad for the AFC U23 Championships in China – flying out to join teammates straight after the Tuesday night fixture.

By the numbers:

  • Each of the last six clashes between these teams at McDonald Jones Stadium has ended in a draw.
  • Newcastle Jets will be searching for a third consecutive win at McDonald Jones Stadium under the same manager for the first time since 2009/10.
  • Newcastle Jets have made 1,015 passes into the final third this campaign, the only team to have broken into four digits in the category.
  • Nikolai Topor-Stanley is the only player to have played every of the Jets’ 1,260 minutes this season.
