Report: Jets unable to overcome Brisbane

It was a tight game, and in the end the Brisbane Roar emerged 1-0 victors over the Newcastle Jets.

In a second successive game at McDonald Jones Stadium, the girls started well and with the inclusion of ‘new’ signing Arin Wright looked keen to make it three wins in a row.

However, a somewhat lucky goal from Brisbane’s Chioma Ubogagu not long into the second half proved the difference as the Roar took all three points back to Queensland.

The Jets started the first half positively, with good friends and attacking weapons Katie Stengel and Taylor Smith combining nicely down the right-hand side early on.

Arin Wright was right in the thick of the action and managed to pop a ball over to Katie Stengel soon afterwards; but the American striker couldn’t get to the header.

Brisbane let the Jets off the hook just moments later, when Anna Margraf missed an absolute sitter at the back post.

The home side went back up the other end and almost put one away themselves after Jenna Kingsley sent a beautiful looking ball over to Arin Wright, but she got under the ball and sent it over.

The game then began to even out a little with Britt Eckerstrsom absolutely crucial between the sticks, making some BIG saves to keep the scores level.

With just minutes left before the half-time whistle, Jenna Kingsley had a huge chance after a fantastic run and ball across from Taylor Smith found her unmarked at the back post. Kingsley spooned her shot over the bar.

After what was no doubt a rocket from boss, Craig Deans at half-time the Jets came out looking good and Taylor Smith almost scored a nice goal after her dipping shot from outside the area went just over.

Minutes later though, Brisbane got on the board. An incredibly fortuitous hit from Roar’s Yuki Nagasoto somehow found Chioma Ubogagu, who slid her finish past Eckerstrom to put the visitors up 1-0.

Taylor Smith had a good chance shortly after as she made space for herself, but her shot went straight to the ‘keeper. Katie Stengel had a nice chance of her own after a Hannah Brewer ball across, but the American couldn’t steer her header home.

The Jets continued to push, the introduction of Cortnee Vine proving a handful for Brisbane as she forced a free kick on the edge of the area and a whole lot of problems.

In the end, despite chances and a whole lot of territory, Newcastle weren’t able to find the goal which would have kept their winning run in tact.
