Review: Brisbane Roar 2, Newcastle Jets 1

Newcastle Jets ended their 2014/15 Hyundai A-League campaign with a 2-1 defeat away to Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Friday evening.

Following a seesawing first 45 in which both team’s goalkeepers produced exceptional saves to keep the score at 0-0, three goals were found in the final 20 minutes of the contest to ensure the scoreboard attendants had a busy end to their nights.

Roar substitute Kofi Danning opened the scoring in the 70th minute when he fired home from close range, but just seven minutes later the Jets managed to restore parity to the contest. Travis Cooper nodded a cross into the path of Ecuadorian attacker Edson Montaño, and the on-loan marksman slid a perfect shot underneath Roar custodian Jamie Young. The strike continued a late season goal surge for Montaño, who claimed three in three to conclude his first season in Australia’s top flight.

Young Brisbane back Lachlan Jackson scored what would prove to be the winner in the 86th minute when he struck a low effort into the back of the net after the Jets had failed to defuse an attack in their box.

Newcastle had a great chance to level proceedings again late on, however unfortunately for Daniel Mullen, his shot from Alivodic’s shot-cum-cross flew over the woodwork.
