The Newcastle Jets match against Perth Glory in the Hyundai A-League on New Years Eve was a great day out for Tilligerry Football Club as they were selected as the Goals for Grassroots team.

As the selected grassroots team, the club is automatically awarded $1000 with an additional $1000 available for each goal scored by the Newcastle Jets during the match, capped at $5,000.

Tilligerry Football Club runs predominantly on fundraising and their persistence paid off when they recently won the Volunteer of the Year and Team Achievement of the Year in the Port Stephens Sports Star Awards. The club managed to raise $9000 to enable the team to travel to Canberra for the Kanga Cup competition in which their U11-s returned home the winners.

Club representative Michael Jarvis said, “The majority of sponsorship in our area has been taken up by our local Rugby League Club. I believe with the money donated from the Goals for Grassroots program will further help our club to keep fees low to enable us to grow our numbers in the grass roots age divisions in 2012.”

Goals for Grassroots was initiated by Hyundai Motor Company Australia to support the growth of football in Australia by nurturing the game at its grassroots level. It has been running for five years and it offers support to local clubs across the country by providing funding in the areas they need it the most. Already over $254,000 has been donated to worthy grassroots clubs around Australia.

“Hyundai and I get enormous pleasure seeing the young wannabe football stars down at the match cheering on their local teams,” said Newcastle Jets Captain Jobe Wheelhouse. “The future and the heart of the game lies here with the kids, and we are delighted to be able to play a part in encouraging and nurturing the community teams.”
