Ernie Merrick has today confirmed that midfielder, Ronald Vargas won’t make the trip to New Zealand for his side’s clash with the Phoenix in Round 23 due to injury.

Originally injuring his hamstring during ACL Qualification in Kashima, the former-Venezuelan international has had a recurrence of the same issue.

Having made a return from the bench against the Central Coast in Round 22, it was thought Vargas would be ready for the run home but he’s been unable to recover in time.

“He’s pulled up a bit sore, his hamstring isn’t going to be ready,” Merrick said.

“I probably brought him in a bit too early [against the Mariners], it was my decision but we needed to do it, we needed to change.

“When he did come on the pitch he scored a goal and he was holding the ball so well.

“There was nothing to lose really, we thought it might make it [the hamstring] a little worse but we had two weeks to recover.

“As it turns out he hasn’t recovered.”

Vargas is expected to be available for the Jets Round 24 clash with Western Sydney at home.
