W-League: Jets double downs Reds

The Newcastle Jets have claimed an important 2-1 victory in their rescheduled Round Nine clash against Adelaide United at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday evening.

With the original fixture postponed due to the smoke from the bushfires, the two sides met in what was the only W-League fixture this weekend as the competition takes a break for upcoming Olympic qualifiers.

After what was a slow opening first half with the heat still causing a few issues, both sides went into the sheds level but it didn’t take long for Newcastle to break the deadlock in the second half.

From the spot, after a penalty was awarded for a handball inside the area, Tara Andrews coolly slotted home to give the home side the advantage.

A few half chances from outside the area marked the following 20 minutes, with both Libby Copus-Brown and Tara Andrews going close with their efforts.

Newcastle gave themselves some security in the 78th minute, when Renee Pountney stepped up to score her first ever Westfield W-League goal with a mature finish at the back post.

The Jets will now have a break as they have the bye in Round 12, meaning their next outing will be the Greater Bank Community Match against Melbourne Victory in Round 13 on Sunday 23 February at No. 2 Sportsground.
