W-League Match Report: Round 2

The Jets walked away from their second game on the road with the disappointment of their first loss of the season after being defeated 1-0 by Perth Glory.

The Newcastle Jets met Perth Glory at Members Equity Stadium this afternoon in their second consecutive away match of Season 2 of the Westfield W-League.
The Jets walked away from their second game on the road with the disappointment of their first loss of the season after being defeated 1-0 by Perth Glory.

With both sides chasing their first goal of the season, Glory-s Elisa D-Ovidio forced the Jets to defend their territory with a strong goal attempt in just the 6th minute of play.

D-Ovidio struck again after receiving a well placed cross off the foot of teammate Lisa De Vanna, forcing Jets keeper Alison Logue to hit the ball over the crossbar.

The resulting corner kick taken by Glory-s Collette McCallum sailed straight into the back of the net, leaving the Jets trailing 1-0 after just ten minutes on the field.
The Jets immediately bounced back to make their presence known inside the Glory box, though with several feet in the box and a later shot by Leia Smith, the Jets remained scoreless.

Glory-s breakaway attack troubled the Jets, however Logue continued to halt the opposition from slipping the ball between the posts.

Just minutes away from the halftime whistle, Newcastle-s Caitlin Jarvie cut inside the box after fending off a Glory defender, but her attempt to equalise the score was halted by the Glory keeper, Emma Wirkus, who snatched the ball from the ground.

The Jets came out on fire in the second half attacking Perth early, with Amber Neilson playing a strong ball over the crossbar and Captain Hayley Crawford sending a header just shy of the Glory goal.

Smith continued to worry Glory-s defence with a through ball to Jarvie, whose shot fell just short of the goal, while later efforts from Carlie Ikonomou saw the Jet-s best opportunity end in a deflection off the Glory post well kept by Wirkus.
Newcastle-s Kate Hensman added to her side-s onslaught of goal attempts, however the Jets were still unable to find a goal of their own to equalise the score.

Ikonomou was awarded a yellow card after words with the referee and just minutes later Captain Hayley Crawford was awarded her own resulting in a free kick causing concern to the Jets, however the Glory attempt skimmed the post.
Late substitutions by the Glory halted the momentum of the Jets who were attempting to capitalise goal opportunities during three minutes of injury time.
Perth claimed the three points at home and have left the Jets still searching for a victory and their first goal of the season ahead of Newcastle-s first home game next weekend.

Although the side are sitting on just one point after the first two rounds, Coach Wayne O-Sullivan is pleased with the on field effort of the Jets.

“We were very happy with the way the girls played, the first half was relatively even but we are a bit disappointed with the goal,” he said.

“I think we dominated for large parts of the game and we have to take that now into the home game against Sydney and we-re obviously very excited about that.”
The Jets will now face Sydney FC in Round 3 of the Westfield W-League at Energy Australia Stadium on Saturday October 17, kicking off at 3pm.
