We can’t let our guard down says Elrich

The Jets have another test ahead of them this weekend when they take on Sydney FC.

While thrilled to have secured their first win away from home against Brisbane Roar on the weekend, Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets defender Tarek Elrish says the team has another test ahead of them on Sunday when they come up against Sydney FC.

“It has been awhile since we have won away from home and to do it against Brisbane who are the benchmark team was a relief, but we now need to get on with our normal football,” Elrich said.

“Gary (van Egmond) doesn-t want us to get carried away, it is one game and our season is still on the line.

“We have another tough game coming up and he expects us to train like we play and that is what we have to do as professional athletes.”

Elrich believes that the reason the Jets were so successful against Roar was that they stuck together as a team and is hoping they will produce a similar performance against Sydney FC.

“We played pretty tight and we all worked for each other and the win meant so much to the whole team,” he explained.

“They had their chances and we haven-t had the best defensive record but when our defensive line went up, we all followed. In duels when I got beaten, Tiago (Calvano) covered me and that gives you a lot of confidence knowing someone is there backing you up.

“Everyone chipped in and that is a sign of a good team, we have been a bit unlucky this season but we have remained positive and Gary has been positive towards us, we have been working extremely hard at training and it was good to see that pay off against Brisbane.”
