W-League: A tight encounter with China

The Newcastle Jets went down 2-0 in a hard-fought clash with the China national team at Cbus Stadium on the Gold Coast on Thursday night.

A pair of goals late in first-half stoppage time proved the difference between the two sides in hot conditions.

Without regular starters Taylor Smith, Katie Stengel, Gema Simon, and Jenna Kingsley, the Jets took the opportunity to afford game time to a number of players who have bid their time on the sidelines thus far this season.

One of these players was Tessa Tamplin, who played her first full-match for the Club after signing a senior contract at the beginning of the season and impressed with her willingness to go forward.

Britt Eckerstrom was one of the key women for the Jets, making a string of key saves to keep Newcastle in the fight throughout.

“It was a great experience for the entire squad, especially the younger players. It’s an opportunity that we don’t take for granted and something we appreciate greatly,” coach, Craig Deans said.

The Jets will play their second match against the China national team on Sunday at midday (AEDT).
