W’s Captain's Call

Now sitting in 5th position, captain Ariane Hingst is hoping the weekend off will allow the team to regroup before taking on competition leaders Canberra United.

After their 2-1 loss to Melbourne Victory on the weekend, a bye couldn-t come at a better time for the Newcastle Jets W-League team.

Now sitting in 5th position, captain Ariane Hingst is hoping the weekend off will allow the team to regroup before taking on competition leaders Canberra United.

Question: After such a strong start to the season, the team has now suffered three losses in a row, what do you put this down to?

Hingst: I wish I could tell you why we have lost our last three games, but it is difficult question to answer. Obviously one of our biggest problems has been possession, you can't win a game without having the ball.

Question: How does the team go about getting their season back on track?

Hingst: It's still possible for us to reach the finals, obviously it is going to require a lot of hard work but I am really positive that we will still reach our goal. We have had really good training sessions this week and it looks like we have finally found the fun back in the game. As well as working hard we have been enjoying training and laughing together, something that has been missing lately.

Question: With a bye this weekend, will the team get a little bit of a break?

Hingst: It will be a good chance for us to clear our minds, get some fresh energy and be ready for the hard task that's awaiting us.

Question: What positives can you take out of last weekend-s loss to Victory?

Hingst: We played better than we did against Canberra and we put up a really good fight. You could tell everyone wanted to win the game so badly and fought to the very last minute.

Questions: How are you feeling about your own performance?

Hingst: Well, I have high expectations of myself and there have been couple of situations where I have been satisfied with my performance but also moments where I know I could have done much better. It always takes some time to adapt to a different style of playing; especially coming from the German Bundesliga but all together I think I have been performing ok.

Question: After the bye you come up against Canberra, how determined are the girls to even the score with the competition leaders?

Hingst: Like I said we have had some really good training sessions this week and with the bye we will be able to load our batteries and clear our minds. Canberra will be a tough having not lost a game this season but this kind of challenge is why we love the game. If we continue working hard at training we will be able to transfer that into the game and I am positive we will end up with the points.
